The Oprah question

Should Christians watch Oprah?

According to my Sitemeter stats, someone googled that question the other day, bringing them here. As my regular readers know, I’ve written about Oprah before. You can find that post here if you have yet to read it.

Oprah, my dear, you are a quandary to many Christians. This is not the first time a believer has asked this question about you.

Before I offer my opinion, I’ll let you answer first. I’ll post my thoughts tomorrow.

  1. I haven’t watched Oprah since college. Her shows feel like gossip or tabloid reading, which I don’t participate in. This is the same reason I quit watching reality TV (Survivor, etc.). It’s a waste of my time and a clutter to my mind when I could be filling my head with more wholesome, God-honoring things. I know not everything I watch or read is God-honoring, but little by little I’m whittling out the bad. Oprah was one of those things I whittled out a long time ago.

  2. No doubt Oprah is a very successful women, entrepreneur, and celebrity and is very esteemed and respected. Her show is multi-faceted and aims to cover any topic you can think of. However, Oprah is not am subject matter expert on any issues discussed in her show but relies on experts to come on her show to present their expertise.

I think there is a lot to be learned from some of Oprah’s show topics, I especially love Dr. Oz- that being said- I don’t TiVo her or anything and I purposefully don’t watch when her shows are about “spirituality”. The Bible warns us against being deceived and I think she is genuinely deceived when it comes to The Secret and the other books she relies on for spiritual guidance.

  4. That’s a very good question. I liked reading everyone elses’ responses. I used to watch Oprah quite frequently. I used to TiVo it. But, sad to say, her and her show seem to have taken a downward spiral into the deception and foolishness of the world. I pray she finds the ultimate and only truth in Jesus Christ. She has a big influence that could be and should be used for good.

I can remember as a little kid in Maryland when Oprah was a reporter on our local Baltimore news station.

    Times have most certainly changed.

Oprah is rich and wealthy and powerful to the nth degree; I know she’s done a lot of charitable giving.

But I do wonder about her “spirituality” because given her voice/platform/reach, she could do so much as a committed Christian. She wouldn’t have to go all preachy, even; just issue a quiet and confident statement that Jesus is God, ’nuff said. Then live the example.

BTW, haven’t seen a show of hers in over 7 years. No time + no desire.
