It’s Wednesday night – Family Night at church - and I’m looking for any excuse not to go.
Book of Revelation. Good, meaty theology there. But I still don’t want to go to Bible study tonight and it’s nothing against John or end times prophesy.
It’s the DVDs. Not the message – the method. I’m tired of watching DVDs. Sitting, listening, listening to a lecture. I don’t want a monologue, especially one where the preacher whips it out at a rapid fire pace leaving no room for his audience to breathe.
I don’t want to go. No lecture tonight, no more non-interactive DVDs.
Give me the fellowship and back-and-forth dialog with a real person.
I feel badly for Pastor. It must be easier for him to just pop in a DVD than prepare a lesson each Wednesday. He’s okay, but I suspect he’s content to let Famous Preacher Man share all his Revelation knowledge with us.
Too bad it’s via one dimensional media.
I’d much rather go for a drive tonight; think I will. Maybe I’ll go to the mall and walk around. I can’t bear sitting tonight…

Postscript:
I journaled this an hour before leaving for church yesterday with all intentions of escaping after dropping off the family. Never happened. Too much guilt: “The kids and Doc are here, so I can’t just leave.” Too much fear of being judged.
Maybe you are judging me now too.
I love being at church, I love the Word, and great teaching and preaching. Being with my second family. But like I wrote above, sometimes those DVDs… I’m home all day with the kids and as much as I love Twitter and social media, I crave human interaction. You don’t get a lot of that with a DVD. No, you don’t get any interaction from a DVD.
I did stay. I listened. I learned a few things I didn’t know before. I’m thankful for all that.
Yet I can’t wait for this DVD series to be over. Maybe I’ll start praying for the player to break. You never know – perhaps the Lord is tired of it too.

Great post! I can relate. We don’t have DVDs but our chapel service is void of a sense of community and I crave it so desperately. Some Sunday mornings I have to literally force myself to go….to go through the motions and the hassle of getting the kids out the door on my own. Others I don’t force myself. I don’t go and the guilt almost smothers me.
I can understand your hesitancy towards sitting and listening to a lecture. Yes, learning something new is good, but isn’t community and fellowship and interaction even better?

It is okay. I think we all get like that at times. I remember wanting to miss because I was tired of the discussions that lasted forever over every single scripture reference. I couldn’t help it! I just wanted everyone to shut up so we could actually complete a lesson for once instead of it taking three weeks.
I didn’t skip either. Ha!

I can relate. We are using DVDs right now too, all about end times. I feel a good bit like you and even contemplated just dropping the kids off to youth and coming home. I am exhausted. Does God understand? I feel that He does. I ended up staying too, only to find out I’m not the only person there that wants to bolt for the door when the main menu pops up.
I am also glad that I stayed.

Angel, you must be a type-A, task driven person. I’m a talker, so I’d be one of the ones blabbing on and on.
Other Monica, a balance of both Bible centered teaching and fellowship, that’s what I want. It’s so funny – last night I sat next to the only other home schooling mom and folks were shushing us; she had to share a need and I wanted to listen. Nevermind everyone else was singing.
I understand. I also prefer group interaction. I like it when we have smaller groups in youth group, so we can sit on the couches and discuss topics.
I can handle a little discussion, but not a whole lot. I am the person in class that always has their lesson done and probably the next five as well. We did a class once and I did the whole book while the class talked on and on and on and on. My girl Casta could only shake her head and I was like, “What?!” LOL!

Yes! Couches! That’s it – I’m so joining the youth group.
I have felt the same way about DVDs… I’m glad many series provide a study and discussion guide… did this one not have one???
I love the interaction at church,too!! I love seeing how lessons are “fleshed out” in other people’s lives. And seeing the examples of others living out their faith.
But maybe this series isn’t for you. Maybe being involved in a different class or activity during this time is what is what you need!!!

Not so much a study guide, just the notes from the teaching. No fill in the blanks. I love the info and topic, I just wish there was more discussion involved. And I go to a small church, so there isn’t another class option.
