All is well. I think.
Last night I had a chance to talk with my lovely friend. No, I didn’t’ have to drive up to her place to track her down like I thought I would have to do. Found her at our Wednesday church night.
I can’t remember the last time I was so excited to see anyone. It’s been ages since she’s been out to church during the week.
We talked. The first words out of my mouth: I love you. And I didn’t have to say any of the things I rehearsed in my head because she beat me to it. So no heated conversation, no denial, no anger. All tears happy ones.
This whole situation could have gotten ugly fast so I feel like I dodged a relationship-killing bullet with such a good outcome. But keep praying if you think of her. I know I will be. She knows she can’t drink, wants to stop this mistake before it turns into a mountain, yet the stresses remain in her life. I told her to call me or just show up at my house anytime, for whatever reason. She’s a grown up and I can’t put her in a time out, right?
She’s okay, but needs more healing and strength.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

My best advice, just keep being her friend, she needs you. With kids and holidays it’s hard to keep up with how she is doing, but you’ve got to set time aside for her.
Alcoholism is a disease, but it is also a way of self-medicating your problems. She needs a therapist or to join AA to figure out why she needs to drink. Maybe you can offer to go to an AA meeting with her.
I will be thinking of you and your friend. Your friend needs prayers but she also needs to get some constructive help.

That sounds like a remarkable and wonderful “resolution” to this situation. It is awesome to see God move in hearts, even in tiny, tender ways. I’ll continue to pray for her and for you!

Great to hear! That turned into an insightful conversation on your last post. I’m still thinking about it and praying for you and your friend.

That is relationship…I love it. I love being witness to miracles daily. I think Emily has a good point that with the holidays time can get away. When I had a friend in crisis, I actually wrote her name on my calendar every day or two, to remind me to pray, call or go over….it helped me to maintain contact! Thanks so much for letting us join you in this journey. I linked your blog in my post yesterday…
Isn’t it almost just short of stupendous when we see God take what we worry about and turn it around like that? God hears your prayers!

Yes! Silly me for being surprised to see her, huh? Obviously, the Lord took note of all of us talking to Him about the same woman/sister. Thank YOU for contributing to the conversation as to what I should have done, reacted; it makes me love blogging real life all the more.

addiction is just so HARD. i know that Christ on the cross defeated sin and death and all kinds of oppression, but some things just seem so much harder to break, more deeply entrenched.
your friend is lucky to have a friend who cares, to walk alongside, to shine the Light, to remind of grace and forgiveness and overcoming power, made perfect in weakness.
lifting up you both.
heather at the Extraordinary Ordinary blog about alcoholism and addiction (which much raw honesty and beauty.) perhaps a good link for your friend, and for you too as you seek to minister.
