Curiosity Journal : February 2, 2011

A fast update for the ice storm inspired me to go on a photo walk today, taking up my writing time. I’ll be posting more pictures on my Flickr account later if you are interested.

Reading: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

I’m on page 103 out of 426. I can’t say this is the page turner I hoped it would be. Hopefully, if I keep going, it will get better. I hate giving up on books, especially popular fiction.

Playing: Blokus

My five-year-old can’t get enough of this simple, yet strategic game. Win.

Learning: National Geographic: Lord of the Rings : Beyond the Movie

This week we watched a documentary regarding JRR Tolkien and his real-life influences behind Lord of the Rings. Did you know. . . ? Wait a minute, I won’t spoil it for you. If you are a Tolkien fan (and you are, right?), you need to watch the documentary yourself.

Reacting: Egypt, a country in crisis

If you’re like me, then you’ve been keeping an eye on this all week. It’s mesmerizing, isn’t it? Watching a government under protest from it’s people. Of course, all of it accessible to us via Google, Twitter, news channels, etc. I don’t pretend to be a political expert, but I do love a good story, especially one such as the Egyptian people v. a dictator.

God’s speed, Egyptians.

What about you? Have you been following closely what’s been happening in Egypt? Why or why not?

What was your week like in reading, playing, learning, and reacting?

  1. I am reading the book, Reading Lolita in Tehran.

I am playing…I rode my bike through my neighborhood with my daughter as today was delightfully warm. It felt like play.

I am learning…how to cook French food using Julia Child, Francoise Bertrand and Ina Garten as my reference sources. I’m also using the blog, Tartine Gourmand (she has fabulous instructions for brioche and chocolate cake)

I am reacting way too often to my 8 year old with the learning disability. Third grade is hard for all of us around here.

  3. I bought “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” but I haven’t started it. I’ll be even more curious now to read it to see if I like it. Sometimes I’m the oddball. I bought an iPad a couple of weeks ago and returned it after 3 hours…couldn’t stand it.

I am reading “Inside the Revolution” by Joel Rosenberg. Interesting how something written about 3 years ago is so timely today as it is a study about Islam and the middle east.

  4. Monica — I came here via Ann Kroeker, and I love this idea of tracking these few simple things in our lives. The tracking becomes a way to be sure we ARE doing these things, too. Not just existing, but living. I’ll be back, and next time, I hope to have a linkup of my own!
