How fun to have your own .com and a shiny new motherboard! Christmas has come early at the Brand house, it seems!

I definitely affirm your decision to consolidate and stick with one blog only. My life simply doesn't free up enough time for any more than one, so I use categories and theme days to provide some structure and funnel certain types of ideas into a location that I might otherwise have imagined at an entirely different blog.

Hope you can find a system that works and keep giving us food for thought and a few giggles.

I love this!!! 100% love it. I too did some damage to the relationship between my son and me. He went to private and public schools until 7th grade and that made him reluctant to learn anything in a school-like way (and who can blame him). Then I started homeschooling him and bought all the wonderful, no awful, curriculum and thought it would be really easy to just give him assignments, lecture, make him take notes, and do all the worksheets for that book and quizzes and tests. WRONG! I made him miserable and myself miserable and I really felt that I was being the worst mom around.

He didn't like to read out of the Bible with me. He wouldn't pray with me in the room (I used to give him advice on his prayers, what was I thinking?) We cried. I obsessed. I read a wonderful article that made so much sense to me about how kids shouldn't be burdened under that much pressure.

So, now we don't unschool, but I lean that way more and more all the time. We do relaxed schooling. Very little testing, very little paper work, and using different ways to learn things. I believe now that conversations can be a great way to learn without pressure or grades or someone always correcting the other person. I see tests as almost evil and in my mind they should only be done to show that a person has the knowledge to do the job they want to do. I don't think kids should be tested at all. When I do give him a test, I try to remember to tell him that I am doing this to help him know what the system will expect.

I still haven't figured it all out, but my son said something very smart:

"I like learning, I just don't like school."

The confusing thing is that the Shack is being marketed as Christian, when it really is not much more than Young working out some personal issues on paper. Aside from that, theologically it's a just a flat out train wreck.

After reading it myself, I just couldn't figure out what all the hype was about because the book is not that good at all. BUT...the vocal minority ( whoever they are? ) seem determined to keep the controversy alive. I guess even bad press is good!

Where was the polo field? I know of one in PA near where my kids go to camp. I have thought that it would be a neat experience to watch a match.

But polo has way more charm appeal.

Never been to a horse track and I wanted to be a jockey before I realized height matters. That's what happens when you read The Black Stallion books over and over again.

You and I, once again, are very different. I would have taken you all to the track! Yes, it is a bit seedy, but I think on Sundays at the track on the shore, I'm blanking on it's name, they have Family Day so it can't be all bad.

I always win when I go to the track. Not a lot, because the most I have ever bet was like $6!

HI! I don't think you sound like you're bragging...and I can relate. We've done Holy Land VBS for two years at our church (first Egypt, and this year Nazareth). I've always had a casual interest in history, but NEVER thought that this would come in useful in a ministry. Last year while researching my own character in the marketplace (a brickmaker) I stumbled on so much info that I thought would be useful for other Volunteers that I ended up asking if I could make a "guidebook to Egypt" for everyone, and they asked me to do it again this year. I loved Drama in school, but hadn't found a place to use it as church since High School drama team. It was so excited to see gifts I had never thought of as "spiritual" being used in a minsitry! It's wonderful finding the niche that you are gifted to use in the Church.

I think this is just wonderful. You are boasting in the Lord! He has given you a gift for sharing His story with others. And how wonderful that this gift has bubbled up inside of you ... You enjoyed it, and quite clearly, the others did, too!

By the way, you make a very adorable Mary, and I'm so glad you went to the bathroom mirror and snapped a quick photo. :)

What a great opportunity. A neighboring church did the same program this past week, and my little one thoroughly enjoyed Mary's story. It sounds like you have found a new hobby :) I am sure that the reading that you enjoy has played a huge role in your love of storytelling.

I have two teen girls, and I consider myself tremendously blessed. They are as different as night and day. We have emotional ups and downs, but then again so do I. I do believe that having them home with me has lessened some external negative influences. They are involved part time with our local Christian school both in the classroom and athletic fields. This has provided many opportunities to teach how to work with difficult people (including themselves:) . I have found my girls want to be challenged, and they really don't care for the latest trends in style, music, or whatever comes down the pike. We have our share of problems, but it has been a blessing to disciple my teens as we prepare for the time when they will no longer live under our roof. I am convinced that teens don't have to follow the mold of selfishness, laziness, and rudeness. God bless you as you enjoy the blessing of your teen daughter.
