Oprah Winfrey and the Christian

Should Christians watch Oprah?

Friends, I’m having a hard time with a definite answer with this, and you know me, I’m always ready with a Yes or No. I thought I had my answer, wrote up my post to publish yesterday, then I started thinking of the people, the Christians, who may take what they read here and run with it, rather than google God*.

Whoa. That’s a sobering thought, A weighty responsibility for a mommyblogger.

So what to do? How to answer the question? Here’s what I’m thinking regarding Oprah and the Christian. We can discuss in the comments. Please understand: I’m not a theologian. I’m just a Christ follower with high speed Internet, so take this free advice for what it is – my best attempt to answer the question and to help the seeker.

Opinion 1: Christians have no business watching The Oprah Winfrey Show because she doesn’t promote the Bible as Truth.

Based on what I know about her program, I think it’s fair to say she’s not a follower of Christ. So why would a believer want to learn anything from her or expose herself to false teachings? Even watching the episodes about harmless topics like beauty and fashion is not okay because it raises the show’s ratings.

Christian, don’t watch The Oprah Winfrey Show; it will only lead you away from God.

Opinion 2: Christians can watch The Oprah Winfrey Show as long as they don’t depend on it for their spiritual guidance.

This is what I did years ago, before I had young ears in the house, and I needed a distraction while folding laundry. Today, I’d want to watch Oprah to see what she’s talking about, who the guests are, or what she’s into just for the purpose of knowing what she’s preaching. For example, I’d like to see the show with Elizabeth Gilbert as a guest, because I frequently write about her book, Eat, Pray, Love.

My regular readers know the way I think. I like to talk when I’m in a chatty mood (read: everyday!), I’ll talk to anyone, anywhere. I’m not shy. So when I say watching Oprah is okay, these are the situations I’m imaging taking place. Oprah as a cultural point of reference between two strangers.

I admit – Opinion 2 is tricky territory, especially for the newbie Christian. Oprah is slick. She’s a good talker and even has a measure of truth mixed in with all the nonsense, so to watch Oprah means you better know your Bible well. I can understand why some Christians can be deceived.

Of course, if the Lord tells you otherwise, then you better heed His will. A check in your spirit that screams “NO!” when you tune in to her show might be a big clue that the Lord disapproves.

To the Christian Oprah fan

Friend and fellow believer, I pray what I have written here was of help to you. I know it’s helped me to formulate my answer as to what I believe regarding one of America’s most popular television personalities. There is a lot about Oprah I disagree with, but even so, we are called to love her. I do not hate Oprah. I wish her well. How wonderful it would be if she were to give her life to Christ! What a tremendous testimony she would have!

I’ve given a lot of thought to your question, “Should Christians watch Oprah?” I answered it because you asked via a Google search engine, leading you to this blog. Believer, in all honestly, I, nor the Internet, has the answer that will satisfy.  Only submitting yourself to the Lord and His Word will give you peace. Please, go to Him in prayer. Read his Word.

Digging deeper into the question regarding Oprah and the Christian, it’s logical to ask, “Is watching Oprah a sin?” I think that’s the true spirit behind your question.

“Is watching the Oprah Winfrey Show a sin?”

Britney Spears and a nation of tabloid media

One of the reasons I like blogging about books is that it gives me an excuse to write about topics I find interesting, adding fuel to my already fired-up opinions. Right now I’m halfway finished with Through the Storm (A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World) by Lynne Spears, mother to the troubled pop-star Britney Spears. (Goody for Thomas Nelson Publishers, they are now on the blogging bandwagon, giving books to bloggers willing to trade links for free products. I’m going to need more bookshelves.)

Back to Britney: I feel bad for this young lady. She’s so young, with her mistakes and slip ups splashed across print and online tabloids. I had my share of screw ups as a twenty-something, what I call my Brainless Acts of Stupidity.

Would you like to know what they were? You would? Okay, do a Google search of my name. Go on, I’ll wait. (Hint: I”m not that muscular gal. What a hoot!)

What’s that? You couldn’t find anything on me? Of course not, silly, I’m not famous. No one cared a bit  about the mistakes of an average New Jersey co-ed, so my past isn’t here on the Internet. I was free to be me in private. The story of an average and unknown person won’t sell magazines. My goofiness and mistakes, certainly not as wild and over-the-top as Britney’s, will never be known to the world because everyday girls don’t inspire a media feeding frenzy.

Everyday doesn’t apply to Britney Spears because when you step onto the national stage of American consciousness, folks want to know you – the good, the bad and what you had for breakfast that morning kind of detail. I’m sure I don’t need to laundry list all Britney’s escapades here, they are well documented and well known. The last I heard, Britney Spears was the Number One name submitted to Google search.

This is our society today. We crave the intimate, tawdry details of a life behind the music, sports or movie star. And the wackier the better. The more bizarre, the more press she receives. We – and when I say we, I mean American society as a whole – pay lots of money for this privilege of having a seat front row center to the lives of the famous.

Sad, isn’t it? We are a nation with an appetite to know the sins of the famous. We know more about Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, Britney and her kid sister Jamie Lynn and many others because of our craving to read scandal and sin.

For those of us who take the name of Christ, I can’t help but think that if we desired holiness and knowledge of the Word of God with the same fervor we do the lives of the famous, we would be all God calls us to be.

But that’s just me. I could be wrong; maybe I need to stop reading books that shine a light on the ugliness of our society.

Facts and figures: Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2008

Often when I find a blog I like, it’s not only the content that lures me in, but the person behind the blog that I find interesting. I’m fascinated with the who, what, where and how of the blogosphere, so it’s no surprise that I find this document a good read. The number of men vs. women, ages, what part of the US blogs more – all those questions answered for me.

They have me pegged. I’m a female blogger in the majority age bracket with a personal blog.

Move along, people, there is nothing of significance here (except a really cool picture of Jesus)

This is why I have a love/hate relationship with Vacation Bible School. Love the Bible knowledge my kids get, hate the shuttle service. I’ve gotten nothing accomplished this week due to the fact that my morning routine is out of whack. I need my mornings, mentally and physically.

Thank God it’s Friday. Seriously and Amen.

So I got nothin’ for you guys this week besides pictures. Sorry, I know I disappoint, especially after my slam dunk of a post regarding The Demon. Oh, wait! I do have a link to my latest over at the fabulous Relief Journal. My latest thought-provoking post is up for your amazement (or entertainment, how ever you look at it.) It’s a true little story about the Internet and my pastor.

Yesterday I represented Compassion International at the Willow Creek Leadership Summit held at Christ Church in Montclair. Tons of stained glass, murals of Bible scenes on the walls, ornate architecture. So lovely. I wish my church had stained glass like this:
