Elizabeth Gilbert is brilliant!

By Monica Brand, 25 January, 2010, No Comment

Elizabeth Gilbert lived in amazing places. Italy! India! Indonesia! And where does she choose to set up housekeeping with her new hubby ? Care to take a guess?

Elizabeth Gilbert, NewJersey

New Jersey. Ha. Take that nay-sayers. Not only is Gilbert planted in my Garden State, but she’s right here in my part of the Delaware Valley.

Elizabeth Gilbert, Frenchtown

We’re practically neighbors. I could bump into her at the IGA or the coffee shop or she might come to my church. (Errr. She’s probably not coming to church) Hey, how cool is it that after exploring an exotic place like Southeast Asia, it’s my unassuming little patch of Earth that she decides to call home.

Brilliant choice of real estate investing, Liz. Welcome, welcome.

Today I finished  Gilbert’s latest book,  Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage and this week I will be sharing my thoughts.

Have you read it? Do you plan on reading Committed?

Let’s discuss it together.

New Jersey teens arrested for plotting Columbine-like attack

By Monica Brand, 14 December, 2009, No Comment

Two New Jersey high school boys arrested for planning to bomb Bridgewater-Raritan High School.

This is just heartbreaking.

Friends, please pray for those involved: the two teen boys arrested, the high school students who were their alleged targets and for the community of teachers and parents. I grew up in the Martinsville section of Bridgewater. I graduated from one of the old high schools, before there were combined to form the one school there is today. I’m shocked and saddened that this level of evil found it’s way to my hometown.

Homeschool for free: The Taming of the Shrew on August 1

By Monica Brand, 21 July, 2009, No Comment

This is another installment in my quest for finding free homeschooling resources. If you are a New Jersey homeschooler, please share with others. And let me know if you have any freebie and fun learning opportunities to share.

August 1 in Madison, NJ. The Taming of the Shrew It’s outdoor theater and Shakespeare – what could be better? Picnic before the show. Bring a lawn chair and a sweatshirt. It’s been years since we attended, and I’d love to go this year, but I’m not sure this is the right play for my young kids.

A note about the link: Don’t be fooled by the website. Scroll down to find the information regarding the free performance.

Torch held high: home schoolers visit Lady Liberty

By Monica Brand, 11 May, 2009, 5 Comments

Lady Liberty. She’s witnessed so much from where she has stood. Hope, joy, freedom. Pain, evil, hate. Today – a bittersweet day as I watched my children enjoy chasing the gulls and looking over the harbor to Manhattan.

You can’t help but remember when your eyes scan the downtown.

The Statue of Liberty – she testifies well enough on her own, so I’m going to get out of the way now and let my video her do the talking.

I didn’t get a lot of extra time to find worthy links this week. The weather turned fine Thursday and Friday, we were on the go with co-op activities, so this is all I have. Plus, my arm is still bothering me.

Have a good weekend, everyone. Moms, I wish you a lovely Mother’s Day!

Homeschool for free: Milk and Cookies at State Theatre in New Brunswick

By Monica Brand, 8 May, 2009, No Comment

For a while now, I’ve wanted to let you all know about free (or almost free) resources for homeschoolers, especially for those of us in New Jersey. I have four children, and ours is a one income family, so finding cool, fun and education programs that’s not too expensive can be a challenge.

This month, we attended our first Milk and Cookies performance at the State Theatre in New Brunswick. Storyteller Diane Macklin had us engaged in her tales, getting us to make all sorts of animal and nature sounds or hand gestures. The younger crowd loved it – and as a fan of good storytelling – I loved it too. I was afraid it might be too simplistic for my older kids, my 10 and 9 year olds were some of the older ones in the audience, but even they participated, enjoying the show.

My tween, especially. I know how she thinks, what her strengths are, were her passions lie – that’s one of the great gifts of homeschooling: you know your child intimately. My Susan is a storyteller: whether it be writing, oral or using her Webkinz to act out her imagination, she’s good at spinning a good tale. I hope that watching a professional storyteller such as Ms. Macklin plants a seed in her heart of how she can use her gifts in the future.

If you are a New Jersey homeschooler, check out the Milk and Cookies series at the State Theatre.

And, in case you are wondering, they really do give the kids free milk and cookies before the (also free) show. Snacks and stories, can’t beat that!
